Is Apple slowing down my iPhone?

I have heard many complaints lately about the iPhone.  Most of the complaints have to do with two things.  One is the battery life.  “My iPhone battery doesn’t last very long?”  The other complaint has to do with how slow the iPhone operates.  The typical complaint goes something like this:  “Apple slowed my iPhone down in order to get me to buy a new iPhone!”

To those of you who think that Apple is intentionally “out to get you”, I wish that you would take a moment and read the following article.  The article was republished on Quora on January 21, 2018.

On the contrary,

A while back when the iPod / iPhone 2G was released they were advertised with a 600MHz processor. This is actually not the case as they have a 800MHz processor. You can unlock it in the file system if you like. When later iterations iOS were released for these iPhones it regulated the processor speed to a higher clock to compensate for the chunkier Operating System.

People these days mistake new Operating Systems, which have higher requirements to run, for marketing practices like slowing down the phone so you buy a new one. It’s blatantly not true.

People seem to expect more from their phone than they should. For instance near the time of the 4S’s demise people were complaining that they were really slow. Of course they would be! You can’t seriously expect a phone from 2011 to run an Operating System designed in 2015. The technology increase we are seeing in phones is astonishing.

Nevertheless Apple does a pretty outstanding job of optimising their software for their phones. It’s quite amazing how the 4S was even supported for that long. People just take this for granted.
